What is an IUD?

'IUD' Stands for Intrauterine Device. An intrauterine device is a small T-shaped device that is inserted into your uterus and provides effective contraception for 5-10 years. Some medicated IUDs also provide period control.

Other common names for IUDs are IUS (intrauterine system) or LARC (Long Acting Reversible Contraception).

What is the subdermal implant (Nexplanon)?

The subdermal implant is a small medicated device that is inserted under the skin of your arm. It provides effective contraception for up to 3 years.

A subdermal implant is also considered a  form of Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC).

Who should get an IUD or a Subdermal Implant?

There are so many contraceptive options, I encourage you to explore some of the resources below in order to help determine the best type for you!

If you want a thorough overview of all types of available birth control - the video below is a great review of each contraceptive available (IUD, Implant, Pill, Patch, Ring, Shot, Emergency Contraception). The video includes testimonials from patients using different forms of birth control and briefly describes insertion procedures for the IUD and Implant.

Each type of birth control has individual pros and cons - think about what is most important to you and then book an appointment to discuss with your health care provider.

To book your consult, call 403-930-6090.
